Red and Black Memories

Red and Black Memories

This combination is pleasing to many. Red is like fire and black is complete darkness. But these two colours have different beliefs attached to it. Growing up in India, I have always heard and read that red is the colour of good luck. Bride wear mainly red as wedding dress,  red is the part of women’s beauty.

Even, Indian goddesses are pictured wearing red. There is a place for black as well which is not a colour I think. Black clothes are not considered good on auspicious day or any festivals. As a teenager, I was always attached to the black. I used to wear black nail paint, clothes, shoes, bag etc.

I never understood why but black was considered good too sometimes. Indian married women wear Mangalsutra( black beaded necklace) which is the symbol of married women. Also, people make black mark on baby’s head to protect them from bad energy.

This has always confused me black is considered bad at some places and good in some case.

I also see red is the colour to show Danger signs on electric boards, or road signs. It is the colour that makes us alert. When women wear red, they appear as goddesses and make that bold appearance.

These two combination holds special place in my heart. My mom loves this combination of Sarees.

These colours makes impact on us in different way. There are always memory attached to it. I wanted to capture those memories in my piece. I painted this as this combination go very well together though there are many beliefs attached to it individually when they are together, it makes that impact on people’s mind and heart.

Well, I hope it does 😜
